Short Abstract: Mobileaware will argue that visual authoring tools will be the primary content abstraction mechanisms, and that markup will be the hidden representation of these abstractions. We suggest that an increase in the amount of abstraction used to represent content will enable multi-device delivery. We urge authors to put less emphasis on the "pixel perfect" approaches of today, and shift emphasis to structure and substance.

We see a trend that supports this position, and we have experience using abstractions with XHTML that shows multi-device support is possible. We believe that we are at the point that bridges two worlds: the old world of markup-aware presentation-focussed authors, and the new world of abstract visual/aural/tactile authors who will never see markup.

Short Bio: Presenter Eamonn Howe, MobileAware co-founder & Principal Architect, is an expert in telecoms and internet technologies and has 13 years experience in the fixed and wireless telecommunications industry where he has occupied senior product development, project management and consulting roles with AT&T, Broadcom Eireann Research and Ericsson. His interests lie in the evolution of Internet technologies to cope with increasingly diverse media formats and end-user access systems. Eamonn is a graduate of the University of Limerick and of Dublin City University.

Co-author Dr Rotan Hanrahan is the Chief Innovations Architect for Mobileaware Ltd (Ireland), with specific responsibility for Research and Technical Standards. He has hosted technology workshops around Europe and has presented at many industry and corporate events. In addition to being part of the W3C Advisory Committee, he is also a member of the Device Independence Working Group, has represented MobileAware in the WAP Forum and is an invited expert in the Java Community Process. He is a long-term campaigner for "ease of use" in software systems.
